Low Cost Adaptive Optics

Building a low cost adaptive optics system of moderate performance is not difficult in principle, and in this article one approach adopted by our group is described. Our system is based on a membrane mirror, a Shack-Hartmann sensor and a simple control system. Two breadboard AO systems are described and we speculate on some possible future developments.

Low-Cost Tunable Adaptive Optics

The tunable acoustic gradient index (TAG) lens is capable of producing rapidly tunable complex optical beams and patterns from a single source beam. The lens uses piezoelectric transducers to modify the density and refractive index within a fluid to generate lensing behavior. The type of beam that the lens generates depends on the electrical driving signal applied to the piezoelectric transduce...

Image-based adaptive optics for two-photon microscopy.

We demonstrate wavefront sensorless aberration correction in a two-photon excited fluorescence microscope. Using analysis of the image-formation process, we have developed an optimized correction scheme permitting image-quality improvement with minimal additional exposure of the sample. We show that, as a result, our correction process induces little photobleaching and significantly improves th...

Deconvolution of Adaptive Optics Image Data

Adaptive optics compensation of turbulence effects in image data is seldom perfect. To achieve diffraction-limited resolution, especially with astronomical systems designed to guide on very dim natural objects, post-detection processing (deconvolution) must be accomplished. I discuss the history of deconvolution schemes in astronomical imaging, the limits imposed by data noise, and details of s...

Image segmentation through reasoning about optics

We have developed a general segmentation framework and algorithm that divides images of multi-colored piece-wise uniform dielectric objects into regions corresponding to coherent surfaces by reasoning about the underlying physics rather than color features or statistics. We present our algorithm and demonstrate its relevance to model acquisition and scene analysis.
